What is Love (pt 5)

Undelified Religion!

James 1:27 (KJV) Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

John 15:13 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)

13 No one has greater love [no one has shown stronger affection] than to lay down (give up) his own life for his friends.

As we go through life, the Church has several responsibilities. We have the responsibility to Evangelize the World, one person at a time, usually. We have the responsibility to do good. We have the responsibility to Worship God. We have the responsibility to Praise God. We have the responsibility to Love Jesus and follow Him. The simple way of doing that is to ‘Read the Red and Do what it Said’. If we were to just take the recorded words of Jesus and apply them to our lives, we would all be far better people.

To heal the sick, house the homeless, feed the hungry, defend the defenseless and assist those unable to do for themselves is one of God’s great callings. In the power of the Holy Spirit you can accomplish all of these things. In the Bible, we are each implored to do each of these. No where in the Bible does it say to let the government take that responsibility on our behalf. The government has no compassion and has limited resources. We, as Christians, can have tremendous compassion and knowing God, we have unlimited resources. We can provide far better than the government ever could imagine. The government looks at helping the needy as a duty they have to do, where we Christians should see it as something we are privileged to do.

But then here comes life. Life gets in the way of much of what we really ought to be doing. Our churches get so busy, these opportunity is only feebly attempted if attempted at all. It is sad to see many churches have gotten to busy to minister to the needs of its own people, much less the community around them. Our focus gets distorted and we become involved in too many worldly things and this is exactly what James was talking about when he said and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

To buy Christmas gifts for others is not wrong in itself, but if it gets between us and ministering to the needs of those around us, it can become a stumbling block. How many of us could actually empty our closet except for a couple of outfits, give it to someone that actually puts it in the hands of the homeless? If we depend on God for our existence, this shouldn’t be a problem.

I once heard of an old patriarch preacher who was going to give the graduating class at seminary their main address. He came a few days early to visit and look around and the young preachers about to graduate noticed that the suit he was wearing was a bit tattered and worn.

They took it upon themselves to take up a collection and take the old preacher down town and buy him a complete new outfit. He looked marvelous, new shoes and all. He asked the clerk to bundle his old outfit and he would carry that home with him.

The next day, he came to give the address, he was wearing his old suit and shoes. Puzzled, the young men asked him what happened? After all, they had bought him a new outfit just for this occasion. When asked, he replied ‘I found someone that needed it worse than I did.’

Now to most of us, if he had given his old suit away, we would have thought of him as compassionate and caring. We would have seen him as a great role model. We would have considered it a real act of sacrifice. After all, he shouldn’t wear the new suit all the time, it would quickly become worn and tattered like his old outfit. But he decided to bless someone else with the best he had. Isn’t that what God did for you? Jesus was the best he had and he gave Him as a stand in for you and for me. If God can do that, shouldn’t we consider this in how we act?

When you are shopping, hustling and bustling about, here is a song I want you to recall. I was introduced to this song when it first came out and has been a favorite of mine ever since.

Sometimes children understand religion better than adults do.

Show some Love as you go through life. This is not something you can do to be saved, this is what you should be doing because you are saved.
