Patience

Lord, grant me patience, but please hurry!!! Amen

That is the prayer many of us pray. We all want patience but are in such a hurry to get it. How many of us could wait 14 years for the evidence of a promise of God? Abraham did.. How many of us could preach the same message for 120 years? Not many, but that is what Noah did.

Abraham in his eagerness to ‘help’ God and after listening to his wife, Sarah, went on his own to a concubine and birthed a son. This was NOT the son God had ordained thus it was not the son He could not bless the world with.

James 1:4-8King James Version (KJV)

4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

ὑπομονή

hupomone¯

hoop-om-on-ay’

From G5278; cheerful (or hopeful) endurance, constancy: – enduring, patience, patient continuance (waiting).

Total KJV occurrences: 32

Part of the definition of patience is: God’s patience is constantly constant. Or consistently consistent, it is the same all the time, no matter what is happening, irregardless of the surroundings and events.

Sticktoitiveness is an old country word for keeping on keeping on. Or staying with a job until it is complete, no matter how you feel, or what you think. FINISH THE JOB. That is the way patience is. You pray for healing. Stand on that healing until you have that healing. Don’t be wavering as warned in James.

Only through patience can we ‘wait’ on the Lord. In Exodus, the Israelites were caught between an army that wanted to kill them all and the Red Sea. No where to go, no where to turn. Moses said ‘Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord’.

Salvation cannot come from anything you do, but must be given by God’s grace. Salvation must be received, not earned. Salvation must be accepted, not taken. Salvation must be put on, not climbed into. And every aspect of your relationship with God must be done with this same patience.

Too often we want to ‘help’ God, or get God to bless what we have done ourselves. God will only bless what faith and patience bring. When you jump out on your own, you are just like Abraham, totally on your own and no blessing from God can happen. Don’t bring forth your very own Ishmael. The world has not been at peace since then, nor will you. When you have your very own Ishmael strapped around your neck, it feels like a millstone.

Don’t run to and fro to find out what God would have you do or say. Have patience. In Psalms 27:14, we find

Wait for the Lord;
be strong, and let your heart take courage;
wait for the
Lord! (ESV)

Ephesians 6:13

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. (ESV)

Psalms 46:10

Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” (ESV)
