Authority that Jesus Gave to You

The Authority Jesus Gave You

Matthew 28:18-20Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)

18 Jesus approached and, [a]breaking the silence, said to them, All authority (all power of rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.

19 Go then and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them [b]into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

20 Teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you [c]all the days ([d]perpetually, uniformly, and on every occasion), to the [very] close and consummation of the age. [e]Amen (so let it be).

Let’s concentrate on the word ‘authority’ translated ‘power’ in KJV

ἐξουσία

exousia

ex-oo-see’-ah

From G1832 (in the sense of ability); privilege, that is, (subjectively) force, capacity, competency, freedom, or (objectively) mastery (concretely magistrate, superhuman, potentate, token of control), delegated influence: – authority, jurisdiction, liberty, power, right, strength.

Let’s see what Webster says about ‘authority’

Simple Definition of authority

  • : the power to give orders or make decisions : the power or right to direct or control someone or something
  • : the confident quality of someone who knows a lot about something or who is respected or obeyed by other people
  • : a quality that makes something seem true or real

According to Webster, authority is about the ‘power to make decisions’ or ‘the power or right to direct or control someone or something ‘

So, Jesus is saying that ALL the rights to make decisions or direct or control someone or something is given to Him. There is NO power greater in the universe than Jesus Christ. And as his followers, he has delegated this authority to us..

Luke 9: 1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. 2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

Three words we want to look at here.. gave, authority and power. What do they mean here?

The word Gave in the Greek:

δίδωμι

dido¯mi

did’-o-mee

A prolonged form of a primary verb (which is used as an alternate in most of the tenses); to give (used in a very wide application, properly or by implication, literally or figuratively; greatly modified by the connection): – adventure, bestow, bring forth, commit, deliver (up), give, grant, hinder, make, minister, number, offer, have power, put, receive, set, shew, smite (+ with the hand), strike (+ with the palm of the hand), suffer, take, utter, yield.

Total KJV occurrences: 413

Power in this verse is..

δύναμις

dunamis

doo’-nam-is

From G1410; force (literally or figuratively); specifically miraculous power (usually by implication a miracle itself): – ability, abundance, meaning, might (-ily, -y, -y deed), (worker of) miracle (-s), power, strength, violence, mighty (wonderful) work.

Authoirity

ἐξουσία

exousia

ex-oo-see’-ah

From G1832 (in the sense of ability); privilege, that is, (subjectively) force, capacity, competency, freedom, or (objectively) mastery (concretely magistrate, superhuman, potentate, token of control), delegated influence: – authority, jurisdiction, liberty, power, right, strength.

Not only did Jesus give us the ‘Authority’ but he gave us the Dynamo, the moving force.. the miraculous power, the ability, the abundance, the strength to get the job done…

Jesus gave us an assignment, then he gave us His authority and His power to back up that Authority… if that don’t ring your bell, your clacker is broke..

Luke 10: 19

Behold, I give to you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

Once again the word for power is better translated Authority…

Matthew 18:18

Truly I say to you, Whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Bind

δέω

deo¯

deh’-o

A primary verb; to bind (in various applications, literally or figuratively): – bind, be in bonds, knit, tie, wind. See also G1163, G1189.

Total KJV occurrences: 44

λύω

luo¯

loo’-o

A primary verb; to loosen (literally or figuratively): – break (up), destroy, dissolve, (un-) loose, melt, put off. Compare G4486.

Total KJV occurrences: 43

In Matthew 18.. Jesus is telling us that whatever we allow in our lives, God will allow.. and whatever we refuse to accept, God will refuse to accept.. How do we do that? With our Faith and with our Words..

Whatever you restrain here, God will restrain.. whatever you set free will be set free..

The lesson for life is this..

You can bind demons and set Jesus free.. or you can hinder His work in your life and set all kinds of demons free.. the power is in your tongue.. and the decision and authority is YOURS.. Jesus gave it to you…… Praise God. To think you can is one thing, but to actually do it is another. That is takes releasing your faith.
