Why Should I Study my Bible?
We live in a time of instant gratification. If something takes longer than 3 seconds, our attention is reverted elsewhere… it seems.. yet it is never more important than now to devote yourself to Bible Study. It seems too many want to go from bumber sticker to bumper sticker. That is nice but not what God intends for us. Paul admonished Timothy:
'Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.'
(2 Timothy 2:15 ESV)
Or from the more familiar to many.. KJV translation
2Ti 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Study is from the Greek spoudazo¯ (spoo-dad’-zo) means to use speed, that is, to make effort, be prompt or earnest: – do (give) diligence, be diligent (forward), endeavour, labour, study
In otherwords.. work hard and be regular at the task of studying your Scriptures.
The term 'workman' is from the Greek ergate¯s (er-gat'-ace) meaning a toiler; figuratively a teacher: - labourer, worker (-men).
We have not been given the Grace of Salvation in order to sit down, it ie EACH Christian's responsibility to seek and to save that which is lost. We are to prepare ourselves to go out into the world and teach them of Christ and what He has done for us... and for them.. then to instruct them in the Scriptures. To do that, we must first know the scriptures..
If in a situation can you take a person through the scriptures and show them what it means to be a sinner, why they need a saviour and how to be saved? This takes practice and diligence.. when is the last time you gave your testimony on what Christ did for you, how and when He did it? What were the circumstances?
Can you write your testimony down? Can you write down some Scripture references? Can you refer to these regularly? Sure you can.. but more importantly, will you use them when you go out? Here is a very useful link to the Roman Road to Salvation.. all Scriptures are in Romans, makes it easier but still complete.
The more you Study your Bible.. the more you will share with others.. you talk about what you do, or are interestedd in.. just listen to football fans.. basketball fans.. fishermen.. ladies that love to cook.. sew, play tennis, you get the idea.. where you put your attention is where your heart is.. after all, money is merely a definition of life reduced to the tangible.. and that is what Jesus was saying 'Where your money (life, attention) is.. there is your heart also.' Or in modern vernacular..... 'Put your money where your mouth is...'
